When it rains… Maybe it needs to.

Rain. Some people love it. Others hate it. It is life giving, and deadly. We can’t live without it, yet too much rain can make it hard to live. Rain has evolved from a simple word that can either be a noun (look at that rain!) or a verb (it’s raining) to a figurative concept showcasing hardships in life. You know the phrases like, “When it rains, it pours.” This illustrates that rain is a bad thing. Unless it’s ‘raining’ money…Or men… Then that could be awesome.

In my current life situation, rain halts progress on my house rebuild, as we are currently working on installing exterior walls. This summer is bi-polar this year, bringing a lot of rain this week. So for me, I am getting sad when it rains, because it means one more day of not getting home. But I did stop to pause on this idea of the negative feelings I have with rain right now.

My ‘happy place’ ironically includes rain. When I am stressed to the max, I often close my eyes and put myself in my happy place. My happy place is in a tent, in a light rain, cuddled up and listening to the sounds of the woods. No phones. No computer. No Tv. No artificial light. Just listening to the rain.

I have had great experiences in life because it rained. Some of my favorite photo opportunities can only come after a hard rain. Rain is romantic. So maybe I need to reframe my current situation. When it rains, the guys come in to wait it out. I get to talk to them, get to know them. I become able to serve them warm coffee and try to keep everyone light hearted. Maybe the rain is a chance to give these hard workers a break. Because really, if God is in control as I believe he is, then the rain is necessary. It may be important. The rain may be needed.

So let’s reframe this song that I enjoy by Jo Dee Messina and Tim McGraw. “Cause tomorrow’s another day. And I’m thirsty anyway. So bring on the rain.”
